The Best of Charlottesville, Virginia from Douglas Gabbert.

Doug has spent almost 15 years in the Charlottesville area. His Hokas have traveled around most of the city and the surrounding running trails.

Best Outdoor Hangout

Kardinal Hall. The go-to when my fiancé and I want a casual drink or a surprisingly good meal. Their outdoor patio space is perfect any day of the week and they have tons of space for impromptu larger groups, plus they also have some of the best TV's in Charlottesville for games.

Cheap Eats

Jack Brown's. Jack Brown's on the Downtown Mall is among my favorite burger joints. I go with the Chiflet - bacon, fried egg and American cheese with the Jack Brown's sauce, a really good burger sauce. They serve 100% American wagyu beef and the beer selection is also among the best in town. It has an edgy, hole-in-wall feel with the walls covered in writing, pictures of locals and whatever else - chaotic in all the right ways.

Favorite Restaurant

Continental Divide. My last meal will be the Santa Fe Enchilada with a pumpkin muffin and a side of Red Hot and Blue chips.

Where to go for Coffee or Breakfast

Ivy Provisions. En Fuego breakfast burrito is the best in town - chorizo, breakfast potatoes, etc. in a wrap. In business school I informally tried as many breakfast burritos in Cville as possible and nothing tops the En Fuego. Just be sure to clear your schedule for the rest of the day...

For Drinks

Alley Light. It immediately comes to mind. Exceptional cocktails and perfect as a date spot - mixology-level drinks and French small plates. Big leather chairs and fireplace make the place feel comfortable.

Activity in Town

Violet Crown Cinema. Another top spot. Dinner, drinks and a movie in large, reclining chairs.

Local Business or Brand

Ragged Mountain Running. Ragged Mountain Running is where I have bought Hokas since before they were cool. They've been in business forever and do a terrific job fitting people well and also staying visible within the larger community.

Insiders Tip

The Best Bodo's Bagel's Order. Pro-move that I learned from Tom Ellington years ago - the best sandwich order in Charlottesville. Go to Bodo's, order an everything bagel with pastrami (trust me, it works), bacon, muenster cheese and pesto. It will change your life.

Honorable Mention

Running on the Garth Road Loop. Charlottesville is a great running city and if you haven't before, you should go to Garth Road outside of town and run the loop through farm country.
